Local Farmers Celebration Event in Moscow, Idaho

By Nicole Hindberg on February 17, 2019

The Agriculture industry is the backbone of the American food industry. Without them, the majority of our food would not be here. However, they are generally a forgotten group of people because they are not seen in the production process that has become commercialized. Nobody sees the type of work that they do, especially in bigger cities where farms are becoming more and more scarce.

Moscow, Idaho is home to many different farmers who produce a variety of things such as lentils and wheat. The community of Moscow and the Palouse prides itself on our farming past. The city has a statue in the middle of town of a seed with layers of different colors that represent various things that the city and the Palouse area produces.

For the past four years, the Moscow community has put on an event in order to celebrate those farmers. On Wednesday, February 20, from 6-7:30 p.m., Moscow will put on their fifth annual celebration of local farmers called, “Love your farmer, Love your food event.”

The tagline of this event is “an evening of connecting community members to local producers and the regional food system”. Farmers from all across the Palouse meet for this event in order to mingle and connect with those in a similar business.

Mary Forney and her husband are local farmers over in Pullman Washington. The two of them have been producing wheat and lentils for over 40 years. She said that “this event is a way for farmers like us to be seen and recognized. Sometimes it feels like we are completely ignored, and we really appreciate that Moscow does this for the community. It means a lot and a lot of people don’t realize how much.”

This event is held at the Moscow City Hall in the council chambers. There will be an agricultural panel featuring producers of vegetables, livestock, grain and grape producers. This year’s guests featured different local businesses and farmers including Colters Creek Winery, Hands and Heart Farm, Milhorn Farmstead, Ollie World Oils, and Texas Ridge.

Forney encourages the public to attend this event. She said, “it will open people’s eyes and show them how much works goes into the Agricultural and related industries.”

This event is free and open to the community. Appetizers and drinks from local businesses will be offered.
